Assistant Director, States Power Project (SPP)
The Center for Popular Democracy and the Center for Popular Democracy Action is seeking an Assistant Director to develop the States Power Project (SPP). The SPP is a first-time project for CPD + CPDA whose purpose is to build power in key states through multiple strategies; first and foremost of which is an integrated organizing program to build sustainable and high quality membership of CPD and CPDA’s partners. The Assistant Director will work closely with the SPP national team, CPD and CPDA’s state partners across the across the country, as well as other allied state and national organizations to support and implement the program.
Position Location: Washington DC. Candidates must be available to travel some.

About the Position
We are looking for a detail-oriented and driven project manager to help design, support and implement this multi-faceted program. The program is currently planned in nine states, in partnership with thirteen state partners, composed of three major components: list-building activity including a major membership-based canvass, follow up organizers, and a digital program to help drive online activism to offline activists. This position would support the director of the SPP to implement all aspects of the program with a special focus on reporting, digital and analysis of the various deliverables. Candidates should have at least 2-years experience working with a field-based affiliate/partner structure or an analogous entity. Candidates must also have the ability to manage several projects at once. Candidates must be passionate about building progressive power, specifically in organizing. This position is an exciting opportunity help shape a new project from the ground up, is national in its scope, and could help break new ground in the organizing sector.
The SPP Assistant Director will report to the Director of the State Power Project.
The Assistant Director will:
- Assist the Director and the SPP Team in designing and implementing the multiple aspects of the SPP;
- Monitor reporting across the different aspects of the program and analyzing for trends, successes, flags, gaps and failures;
- Develop necessary internal and external reports for CPD and CPDA, partners, funders, media;
- Monitor the national budget and budgets across the states;
- Provide strategic and technical campaign assistance including field, communications, policy and legislative strategy to meet the project goals;
- Work with state partners to implement and evaluate the program;
- Help build tools to use across state campaigns including campaign tools, training, communication/messaging materials and evaluations to use across state projects;
- Help the Director with assessment & planning for future growth and necessary changes;
- Coordinate with CPD and CPDA campaigns and other staff to find opportunities for aligned work and cross-campaign coordination.
We are seeking candidates with excellent relationship-building skills, who are outcome driven, with strong and diverse project management skills. Ideal candidates should have demonstrated experience in the following:
- A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice issues and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate income families;
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in project management
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working with independent or semi-independent entities as part of a national effort or organization; ideally at the state or local level;
- Ability to work in a collaborative, cross-team matrix that depends on transparency and trust rather than a top down structure to accomplish goals;
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a broad and diverse set of state partners, allies and others;
- Ability to juggle multiple projects at a time and work in a fast-paced work environment;
- Independent and strong organizer that is able to drive project and programs to completion;
- Experience working in diverse communities and with grassroots organizations; and
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
Salary and Benefits:
The salary range for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience. We have a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 15 vacation days per year, 10 sick days per year, 12 paid holidays per year, and contributions to individuals’ 401K plans.
