Campaign Director, Economic Justice and Wall Street Accountability
Location: Flexible, with ability to travel to East Coast
Over the past 5 years, CPD and our network of nearly 50 affiliates in 35 states have been at the cutting edge of winning high-impact economic justice campaigns -- raising the minimum wage, winning earned sick leave, winning first-of-their policies for a fair workweek, winning expansion of early childhood education with quality jobs for providers, and more. Our Fed Up campaign has changed the national conversation on monetary policy, putting the needs of Black workers in particular at the center of the debate and forestalling rate hikes. At the same time, we are assessing opportunities to undertake new bodies of work, ranging from campaigns for universal basic income to winning paid family leave policies that work for low-wage workers.
CPD and our network have also helped drive critical Wall St. accountability campaigns, including holding Wall St. accountable for its role in the financial crisis, challenging the abuses of the hedge fund and private equity industries, and protecting communities and consumers from various predatory financial practices.
About the Position:
CPD seeks an experienced campaigner to join as the Director of our Economic Justice and Wall Street Accountability work. The Director will report to one of our Co-Executive Directors and supervise the team leads who drive our issue campaigns. The Director will help knit together our existing issue work under an integrated campaign framework, and will work closely with our Racial Justice team to elevate RJ goals within our EJ work. The Director will engage deeply with other core CPD teams, including our Director of Strategic Research to develop a robust research agenda, our Organizing & Capacity Building team to ensure that our campaigns also build lasting organizing infrastructure and build our affiliates’ base, our other Campaign Directors to identify opportunities for cross-cutting campaign collaboration, our Field Innovation Program to test new organizing strategies on EJ and Wall Street Accountability work, among others. The Director will also explore emerging issues and bodies of work, and collaborate with CPD's senior leadership and Network to assess and launch new work. The Director will have ultimate responsibility to raise and grow the team budget, to raise funds to support other core institutional capacities (research, digital, comms, etc.), and to support team members in their fundraising work. We are seeking a candidate that can help dramatically scale the impact of our already high-impact EJ team. An ideal candidate will bring proven campaigning skills, especially coordinating large national campaigns that build power and win change. Campaigners with significant campaign experience outside the EJ realm are encouraged to apply, as well as campaigners with a depth of issue knowledge. The leading candidate should have issue familiarity, and preferably skills, experience or relationships that complement the existing team.
CPD, and our allied c4 CPD Action, build organizing power and transforms the local, state, and national policy landscape through deep, long-term partnerships with leading community organizing groups and labor unions nationwide. CPD/CPDA collaborates with partners to build their internal strength, infrastructure and capacity – and to envision, run, and win campaigns to move a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial justice agenda at the city and state level. Increasingly, CPD is driving national campaigns – both to fight back against regressive change at the federal level and to push an affirmative vision. The ideal candidate will approach their work with an intersectional lens, and be deeply committed to elevating racial and gender justice as core components of an economic justice strategy.
- Work with, mentor, and supervise issue team leads to envision, run and win ambitious campaigns for economic justice and Wall Street Accountability. Ensure strong campaign planning practices that reflect CPD’s methodology and theory of change, and which support building the base, strength, and infrastructure of our state-based partners.
- Drive strategic thinking about CPD’s vision for economic justice broadly, which frames and anchors CPD’s specific issue work. Ensure that racial and gender justice are core priorities within the work, and that proposed campaign goals reflect these priorities. Anchor this within CPD’s staff and with CPD’s affiliates.
- Support CPD and our EJ campaign staff to envision and drive an ambitious national program for change that complements our existing issue work.
- Support CPD staff in experimenting with emerging campaigning and organizing approaches (digital, peer-to-peer organizing, etc.).
- Spend significant time cultivating key funder relationships to fundraise to support EJ work, as well as other CPD priorities.
- Work effectively with other senior staff from CPD’s core teams and departments.
- Represent CPD in national landscape and build and maintain effective relationship with a range of allies.
- Support the leadership of team members at all stages of their career. Ensure team members provide high quality supervision to junior team members.
Requirements for the position include:
- A demonstrated commitment to social justice, and a sophisticated analysis of racial justice as an imperative for a successful economic justice agenda
- A commitment to building people’s institutions as a core element of building power
- Minimum 10 years working in a worker or grassroots community organizing context
- Minimum 10 years experience running and winning complex, multi-jurisdictional issue or organizing campaigns
- Minimum 10 years experience managing large teams and complex projects or initiatives
- Significant foundation, individual donor, and other fundraising experience preferred
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving, email-heavy environment with staff from diverse backgrounds, working in varied issues with varied types of expertise, and spread across the country
- Experience moving a c4 political program is a bonus but not required
- Oriented to problem-solving and yes, with an ability to organize colleagues to a considered “no” when appropriate
- An orientation towards the institutional “whole” even as you build and drive a high-capacity, effective team to move the EJ body of work
- Ability to do moderate but not heavy travel preferred
- Spanish language ability preferred
