The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We currently work with more than 53 affiliates in 34 states and Puerto Rico, and build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations to envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. About the Position

We seek an experienced and energetic campaign-focused Senior Organizer to help the network develop, run, and win defund police and other decarceral/justice transformation fights across the country at the federal, state and local levels. The Senior Organizer will work closely with our grassroots affiliates to understand their existing priorities and opportunities, support the campaigns they are driving, and develop a national program to win policy and budget fights that shift resources away from policing and incarceration towards community needs. 

A strong candidate will have significant campaign experience, having managed issue or budgetary campaigns from start to finish, including experience building broad multi-racial and multi-stakeholder support towards victory. The ideal candidate will also have deep alignment with CPD/A’s theory of change, which focuses on building strong people’s institutions, working to support social justice movements, and facility moving between institution-building spaces and “movement moments.”

Primary Responsibilities

The Senior Organizer’s primary responsibilities will include:

  • Developing a national program that supports grassroots organizations across several jurisdictions to launch new or advance existing defund police campaigns;

  • Building deep, close relationships with core CPD/A affiliates who are focused on driving racial justice, criminal legal system transformation work;

  • Providing ongoing strategic campaign and organizing support to affiliates, and to help coordinate efforts with CPD/A’s Base Building, Organizing, Digital, and Communications Teams;

  • Working closely within the broader justice transformation and Local Progress teams at CPD/A to coordinate campaign, policy, training, and research development needs and opportunities, including close coordination with education justice team’s police free schools campaigns

  • Represent CPD/A and the network at key national spaces and tables;

  • Carrying responsibility, with staff from other senior CPD/A staff and CPD/A’s Development Department, to fund raise to expand funding and raise/leverage sustained resources to the field.

Job Requirements

  • A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice organizing, and fluency and understanding of the challenges facing Black and other communities of color, immigrant communities, and low-and moderate income families;

  • At least 12 years extensive experience in progressive issue or budgetary campaigns, particularly at the local community level;

  • Strong progressive values, including a commitment to decarceration, with a fluency and understanding of the harms of policing, criminalization, and incarceration;

  • Experience and familiarity with digital and online campaign engagement; 

  • Comfort and flexibility in this challenging period of remote communication, coordination, and supervision;

  • Experience managing large programs and projects and working across departments or teams within an organization;

  • Success as independent, self-motivated, and strong leader that is able to drive project and programs to completion in fast-paced environment;

  • Ability to work within a coalition of diverse organizations and partners;

  • Experience working in diverse communities and with grassroots organizations;

  • Experience raising resources from foundations and/or individual donors;

  • Excellent writing and communication skills;

  • Results-focused and organized.

Salary and Benefits:

This is a union position. Salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years’ experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $80,000 - $90,000 and category 4. The CBA is available here.
