Senior National Organizer for Climate Justice

Washington, DC

Position Location: Washington, D.C., Brooklyn, N.Y. preferred. Remote possible, within the US.

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action is seeking a full-time Senior National Organizer for Climate Justice.

About CPD

The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We currently work with more than 53 affiliates in 34 states and Puerto Rico, and build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations to envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position

Each day brings a devastating new story of climate change’s disproportionate impact on low-income people, particularly people and communities of color, and this burden will rapidly intensify as time goes on. If our communities are to develop adequate crisis resiliency and if we, as a society, are to change course to mitigate the worst impacts of the climate crisis, social change organizations deeply rooted in climate’s frontline communities must play a central role in urgently building the movement for climate justice.

Modeled on our track record of work to advance economic, social, and racial justice, CPD is building a climate justice program area to support affiliated state power organizations and national allies with the policy, research, campaign, and organizing capacity needed to spark bold action on climate, at the scale and at the rate truly needed to address the crisis we face.

We seek an experienced, creative and energetic organizer to help lead the development of this critical program area. This position is an exciting opportunity to play a leadership role in envisioning and building the capacities needed to advance bold, multi-faceted climate organizing and support campaigns in Washington and throughout the country.

  • Connect climate justice campaigns in cities and states across the country into an integrated national effort;

  • Work effectively with CPD’s capacity teams to add firepower to CPD affiliates’ campaigns and to strengthen them as organizations;

  • Steward, expand and develop key national, regional, and state-based collaborations with allied organizations on climate justice;

  • Provide support to affiliate partner organizations to expand and amplify their climate justice work.

  • Fundraise to cover and expand this program area’s budget, and to support the aggressive growth of climate organizing in the field;

  • Engage anchor affiliates in leading the development and implementation of CPD’s climate justice work;

  • Collaborate closely with CPD’s other teams, including the research, policy, organizing, digital and direct action staff to ensure thoughtful integration of climate work with CPD’s other priority power building work;

  • Represent the CPD/A Network in national-level policy and campaign conversations at external meetings, coalition tables, and conferences.
