POSITION SUMMARY:  The Service Director oversees the direct services provided at Detroit Action to improve the health and expand access to opportunity for our homeless, formerly incarcerated and working-class membership. This includes coordinating, developing, implementing and monitoring services including, but not limited to harm reduction (syringe exchange, outreach, overdose prevention, care coordination, hepatitis C testing, navigation & treatment, expanded syringe access programs) workforce and job readiness group activities and our current legacy services such as birth record and ID access and Street Outreach Court Detroit. The Service Director ensures that members and potential clients consistently access high quality, culturally appropriate services at Detroit Action, and that services are provided in a low-threshold and nonjudgmental manner. The Service Director understands that they are building an innovative “service to organizing” model and not solely providing charity.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Coordinate with local partners and stakeholders to offer wrap-around services (as set by program deliverables) responsive to current and ongoing needs of Detroit Action members

  • Manage Detroit Action service programs for homeless and low income Detroiters such as the birth record and ID access program and Street Outreach Court Detroit 

  • Execute engagement strategies to strengthen relationships with Detroit Action members, recruiting service clients to become members 

  • Create and execute volunteer recruitment strategies 

  • Create and execute training for volunteers

  • Work with Executive Director and Managing Director to build out suite of services to support low-income workers and provide harm reduction strategies for current drug users

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Coordinate calendar of member activities (weekly/monthly): 

  • Supports on-site coordination with member leaders, organizers and other stakeholders

  • Support member assembly meetings, trainings and other Detroit Action events

  • Bilingual in spoken and written Spanish is a plus

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Licensed Master Social Worker preferred

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Masters in related field (i.e. Social Work, Public Administration, etc.) or comparable work experience required

  • 2+ years of Community, Electoral or Labor organizing experience highly desired

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Be able to think creatively and outside the box

  • Background in and passion for working with low-income and immigrant communities around issues of affordable housing, criminal justice and/or immigrant & worker rights; familiarity with these issues in Detroit highly desired. 

  • Ability to recruit, employ, train, supervise, and evaluate qualified staff; develop and foster teamwork; and take personnel actions

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: 

The Service Director reports to the Executive Director and works collaboratively with staff, contractors, vendors and other partners on a regular basis to maintain program efficiency. Detroit Action and Michigan Action are projects of Tides Center and Tides Advocacy.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

Must be able to lift boxes of training materials. 

Able to attend conferences throughout the United States. 

Must be able to travel domestically on an airplane 4-8 times a year. 

Must have access to reliable transportation

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

The position is a full-time position that works 35 hours per week. This position is based in an office building in Detroit, MI - The position will be required to work some weekends (Saturday and Sunday).  The position may require national travel up to 100% of the time. The assigned workspace is a cubicle in an open and shared work area with a moderate  level of noise and interruptions. 

About the Organization:

Detroit Action and its sister organization, Michigan Action, are hosted projects of Tides Center and Tides Advocacy. We are affiliate partners of the Center for Popular Democracy (CPD) and the Alliance for Youth Action. The successful candidate will receive generous benefits as provided by Tides. The salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years’ experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $60,000-$70,000.
