Director of the Litigation Partnerships Project and Senior Counsel

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action is seeking a full-time Director of the Litigation Partnerships Project and Senior Counsel.

The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. About the Position
CPD/A is seeking a Director of the Litigation Partnerships Project / Senior Counsel who will help envision and drive the implementation of an initiative to create partnerships between CPD/A, its affiliate network, and the plaintiff bar to advance access to justice as well as generate independent revenue for CPD/A and affiliates through these partnerships. The Director is responsible for working closely with others on staff and throughout the network to ensure that the strategy is in line with CPD’s institutional priorities and plans for growth. They will ensure that CPD/A’s partnerships advance justice for affiliates while creating litigation-related income for the CPD/A Network and affiliates. As a member of a small in-house legal team, the Director of the Litigation Project and Senior Counsel will also support general organizational compliance with legal research, staff trainings, and advice to staff and organizational leaders as needed. We are looking for a talented, capable leader, with legal training, to help develop CPD/A’s relationships to realize those goals.
The Director of the Litigation Partnerships Project / Senior Counsel will:
Create and oversee execution of strategy for CPD/A to partner with the private bar to increase access to justice while also generating revenue for CPD/A, our affiliates and the members of our affiliates:
Research model and experiences of similar partnerships;
Identify litigation opportunities and partnerships, and prepare litigation partnership opportunities for organization approval.
Develop the relationships and the draft partnership agreements needed to implement a successful legal strategy
Develop relationships and agreements to advance an independent revenue strategy through this initiative;
Design systems to track the efficacy of various tactics and strategies;
Oversee the implementation of the partnerships with affiliates, private bar, and CPD/A on litigation opportunities.
Establish strong internal systems for coordinating litigation partnership work with CPD/A campaign priorities, as well as with revenue generation work.
Oversee creation, maintenance and dissemination of training, outreach and evaluation materials and reports;
Fundraise to support this work;
Provide legal advice to CPD staff on internal legal matters, including but not limited to employment and labor law, contracts and grants, tax matters, lobbying compliance, political activities and campaign compliance, defamation, and liability and insurance matters;
Applicants for the Director of the Litigation Partnerships Project / Senior Counsel position should:
Be a strong leader & project manager - Demonstrate experience effectively coordinating large teams and across teams. Possess strong program design skills, able to build rapport among their team while facilitating staff achievement of ambitious goals.
Be committed to CPD/A’s mission - Possess a commitment to racial equity, social justice, and community organizing. Be sensitive to the challenging dynamics of raising money for an organization fighting racial capitalism in a capitalist system, and comfortable navigating those dynamics.
Be an attorney - This position will need to understand the law, the legal system, legal associations, law firms and the civil justice system in the United States.
Have strong interpersonal skills - Possess a high level of emotional intelligence and awareness of interpersonal dynamics to work with a diverse group of colleagues, building support and consensus around fundraising priorities.
Be a successful fundraiser - Possess at least 8 years of demonstrated successful fundraising experience and a strong familiarity with the progressive funding universe. Particular expertise or knowledge in one or more of the following highly desirable: foundation fundraising, major gifts, low-dollar individual fundraising, C4/political fundraising.
Possess superb writing and editing skills.
Demonstrate solid financial management knowledge - comfortable developing and navigating budgets, familiar with basic nonprofit financial management & reporting practices.
Have extremely strong organizational skills, an ability to deal with many tasks and prioritize while being on top of details, reflecting the fact that CPD and CPDA are large, complex, multi-faceted organizations. Work effectively on a tight schedule and be able to set and meet realistic deadlines.
Show a passion for excellence and eagerness to help the organization meet its goals,
Show ability to work across multiple infrastructure and programmatic teams, with staff spread across the country, to meet goals.
Have facility with spreadsheets, Microsoft Office suite, and Salesforce.
Have experience working closely with senior management and Boards, in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic work environment.
Salary and Benefits
Salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years’ experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $100,000- $125,000. We have a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 15 vacation days per year, 10 sick days per year, 12 paid holidays per year, and contributions to individuals’ 401K plans.
