About the Position
The Director of Creative & Social Media Strategy is a strategy leader who works closely with teams and coalitions at the inception of new projects and in support of ongoing campaigns.
As a creative lead, the candidate is guided by a strategic communication plan and in partnership with a community of affiliates and partners. They are responsible for using tools and processes to help teams unearth, develop and ignite the most powerful, action-inducing audio, visual and experiential stories that help turn moves into movements online, on TV, radio, on streets and through halls of power. As the social media lead, the candidate translates creative products into measurable social media engagement, ties projects together to cast broader impact and designs social-first content strategies.
A strong candidate will have significant experience designing and implementing campaigns rooted in culture work that inspire diverse audiences across the ladder of engagement. Assigned to different issue teams simultaneously, the candidate can quickly shift gears between delegation, direction, 3rd party vendor and consultant management, and to personally fill gaps in roles where they may exist.
The ideal candidate will have deep alignment with CPD’s theory of change, which focuses on building strong people’s institutions and a community of action committed to building a world in which we are all free to thrive together. For each project, they will co-create solutions that build a political base, challenge white supremacy and anti-Black racism and take on corporate power.
Work with internal and external stakeholders on the ideation and integration of online strategy, content and technology to advance campaign goals.
Lead the organization’s social media strategy and operations, and assist strategically with affiliates and network in growth of audience.
Direct and manage facets of online campaigning in designated issue areas, including, but not limited to, developing campaign plans, generating content for email and websites; coordinating with graphic designers and video producers, and managing advertising.
Analyze and report metrics for their campaigns; work with Digital Director and campaigners to consistently improve relevant metrics.
Respond to latest news in designated areas and take action on opportunities to advance campaign goals.
Ability to communicate effectively. Expert written, oral, and visual communication is essential.
Excellent writing and editing skills required.
Ability to handle multiple “priority” projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines required.
Ability to work rapid-response campaign hours—including nights and weekends—when news breaks or campaign activities otherwise demand is required.
Commitment to social justice.
High level of flexibility and adaptability, with excellent interpersonal, collaborative and soft skills required.
Wit, a strong sense of humor, and ability to communicate persuasively.
A deep well of professional practice in the high level digital, print, multimedia production.
Demonstrably strong social media campaign experience and ongoing practice to stay ahead of the curve both in cultural directions and rapid changes in technology.
Proven experience managing strategy, designing and implementing content, and website development for online campaigns.
Experience developing and implementing strategy on a wide range of campaigns, including community organizing, political, and legislative, as well as experience working with grassroots activists.
Demonstrated wise judgement in maintaining a high profile organizational voice with skill, honoring of values and serious attention to detail.
Well practiced in culture work ideation and production.
Knowledge of social media platforms, website development, HTML, and content management systems such as Wordpress and Drupal.
Knowledge of and experience in SMS platform messaging and management such as Mobile Commons, Hustle, etc.
Knowledge of the use of new technology for community advocacy.
Experience building audiences and engaging communities online.
Knowledge of political advocacy campaigns.
Experience placing content for digital news media companies such as Vox, NowThis!, Buzzfeed, Upworthy, Blavity and others.
Experience working effectively with internal and external stakeholders in complex and sometimes political situations.
Experience leading successful advertising campaigns.
Demonstrated ability to grow and maintain respectful and mutually rewarding relationships with front line community leaders and public figures.
Experience in filmmaking, podcast production is a plus.
Ability to write and proofread Spanish is a plus.

The salary range for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience.
